We set off from the Whistle Stop at 6:30 AM to begin the 8-hour car ride to Death Valley. About 3/4 of the way there, the alternator failed on the Scoutmaster's van, and we detoured north of Lone Pine and set up camp within view of Mount Whitney while the alternator was replaced.
The next morning, we woke up to 28 degree temperatures and a beautiful view of the back of the Sierras. After breakfast, we checked out the Reward gold mine and then headed for Death Valley.
The valley temperatures were 50s at night and 70s during the day, perfect weather for checking out Scotty's Castle and the unique geological features of Death Valley. We brought back lots of great memories from this trip, and we hope to return to Death Valley in the future.
